It all starts from the idea...

Maido and Priit. Two diving friends who randomly started thinking about seaweed at the same time 6 years ago. Maido was participating in the construction of the first Norwegian scientific algae farm, and Priit became interested in the cultivation of red algae, a different type of seaweed. By sharing their thoughts, Maido and Priit decided to bring together the ideas and try seaweed farming in Estonia as well.

Research: Can Seaweed Grow In Estonia?

Estonian best known algae is red algae agaric. In cooperation with the University of Tartu, a research work on the possibilities of growing agar and bladder dragon in Estonia has begun. The study showed that in our waters it is not possible to cultivate seaweed with today's knowledge. However, research on this topic continues.

Norwegian coasts are ideal for seaweed cultivating

We got back to where we started - to the algae growing on the Atlantic and Norwegian coasts. The number of algal species growing under ocean conditions is much higher and the growth rate is ten times faster due to the nutrient-rich environment. In Norwegian waters, algae grow in an ecologically clean environment and in harmony with nature, ensuring that our algae are of excellent quality in accordance with the European eco-certificate.

The first test batch reaches Estonia

Norwegian colleagues were fascinated by the interest of Estonians in algae. The first batch of samples was sent to us - 200kg deep frozen saccharina latissima, commonly known as sugar kelp or kombu. We all knew that the power lies in cooperation and every new knowledge brings us together closer to the goal.

Finding the best way to consume seaweed

From the moment when 200kg of algae came to Estonia, the algae is part of the daily life and dining table of Maido and Priit. A lot of different recipes have been tried. Although fresh algae have been used, it has now been concluded that algae are the simplest and most useful to use in freeze-dried form. So all the vitamins and minerals that our body needs are preserved. Freeze-dried algae are also easier to handle and use in a fast daily life.

Get ECO Sertification

For us, pure algae and ecological cultivation and drying are the most important. That is why our firm goal was also to gain recognition in this area, which was realized in 2017. All algae that we use and market are grown and processed according to the European organic food requirements.

Birth of Numami

Numami is the abbreviation for Nordic Umami - Nordic Taste. Numami suggests that all of our algae come from the Atlantic Ocean, and most of them are from the North Atlantic - the North Sea. Growing in the clean waters of the Atlantic coast of the Atlantic Ocean, fed daily by the Gulf Stream, our algae are ecologically clean and mild and contain the vitamins and minerals that the body needs.
